“What we do is kind of a no-brainer,” proclaims the website of the Campus Kitchens project ... but the service they provide is anything but. College students power this hunger relief organization – recycling leftover campus food, planning deliveries, preparing meals and bringing them to low-income community residents. The organization is headquartered in D.C. and works in communities from D.C. to Spokane, Washington. They’re upbeat about setting goals: “We want a Campus Kitchen at every school that wants one. And, we want every school to want one.” |
WINNERS' WORDS:
“We work with everyone – food banks, campus cafeterias, farmers’ markets. Nothing goes to waste. Students handle everything – from picking up the food and preparing it to delivering it. We also provide education and empowerment to our clients. The program helps people repurpose their lives – the students as well as the clients. We take existing resources and create something better!”
